Rofgo-Collection - Rennszene - Le Mans 1971 »

The 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 39th Grand Prix of Endurance and took place on 12 and 13 June 1971.

This year would be the swansong of the mighty engines – the incoming regulations would put a 3-litre limit on engine capacity. As it turned out, this was a perfect meeting of the most powerful racing cars yet seen, a long fast track and extended good weather produced the fastest race in the event's history to date, setting a record that would stand for almost 40 years. Although there were few accidents that year, there were many cars forced to retire with mechanical problems and only twelve cars were classified at the finish.

The winner, at a record speed, was the Team Martini Porsche 917. Second was the Team of John Wyer Automotive Engineering in a Porsche 917K in gulf colours with the drivers Richard Attwood and Herbert Müller.
