The first 24-hours-race of Le Mans, the 1er Grand Prix d’Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans, also Premiéres Grand Prix d‘Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans, Coupe Rudge-Whitworth, took place on 26th and 27th May 1923, on the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans.
The idea was to test the cars' reliability in a race that continued overnight. It was not only a test of their engines but also the accessory parts, as for example the lights of the cars, whose development still was in its infancy back then.
As a matter of principle, this has not changed until today, as next to speed, reliability also influences the progress of the race. In those early days the drivers even had to refuel their cars and change tyres during pit stops by themselves.
