Rofgo-Collection - Zeitart - Section 1 - Howmet »
The Howmet TX was the prototype of a US-racing car, designed in 1968, in order to research the competitiveness of gas turbine-powered vehicles in motor racing.
Developed by the racer Ray Heppenstall, the car combined a chassis built by McKee Engineering with a gas turbine leased from Continental Aviation & Engineering. The project was financed by Howmet Castings. Even though the Howmet TX was not the first attempt to use a gas turbine in motor racing, it was the first and up to now the only one to win a race - two victories in the races of the Sports Car Club of America.
After the Howmet TX had been withdrawn from racing operations, it still set six land speed records.
